Payroll Specialist II Job Opportunity in Houston, TX

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist II for a 6-month contract opportunity in Houston, Texas. This position is ideal for a payroll professional with at least three years of experience processing multi-state payroll and a strong understanding of federal, state, and local payroll regulations.

The Payroll Specialist II will be responsible for accurate and timely end-to-end payroll processing, including payroll audits, employee data validation, earnings and deductions, retroactive pay, final paychecks, payroll adjustments, and discrepancy resolution.

The successful candidate will work closely with Human Resources, Finance, Benefits, employees, and managers to ensure payroll accuracy, compliance, and an excellent employee experience.

What You'll Do

  • Process bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll accurately and on schedule.
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing for employees across multiple states.
  • Review and validate payroll data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Audit timecards, new hires, terminations, pay changes, leaves of absence, and other payroll transactions.
  • Process earnings, deductions, bonuses, reimbursements, retroactive pay, and payroll adjustments.
  • Review payroll reports and identify exceptions or discrepancies before payroll is finalized.
  • Research and resolve complex payroll discrepancies and employee pay questions.
  • Process final paychecks in accordance with applicable state payroll laws.
  • Monitor and manage payroll inquiries through Salesforce.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Finance, and Benefits teams on payroll-related activities.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and supporting documentation.
  • Protect confidential employee and payroll information.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, efficiency, and accuracy.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3+ years of payroll administration or payroll processing experience.
  • Hands-on experience with end-to-end payroll processing.
  • Experience supporting multi-state payroll.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
  • Experience researching and resolving complex payroll discrepancies.
  • Experience with payroll and HR systems such as ADP, Workday, Salesforce, or similar HRIS/payroll platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict payroll deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive employee and payroll information with a high level of confidentiality.
